Although compared to the iconic AC cobra initially, Viper proved to be too large to be compared with it.

While its design phase kicked off in 1987, the Viper was launched in the North American International Auto Show in the year 1989, and received tremendous public response. Lee Iacocca, the chairman of Chrysler Corporation at that time, gave an approval for the car in May 1990, and the first deliveries started in January 1992.

First generation (1992- 95)

The Viper RT/10 “Roadster” had a truck like engine design, which was much powerful as compared to the existing Lamborghini, a division of Chrysler at that time. A “two – valve” design was considered improper for the first generation Viper, but due to budget constraints, no redesign was done. Performance was pretty satisfactory as it completed a quarter mile in 12.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 164 mph.

Second generation (1996 – 2002)

Second generation Viper RT/10 had a more powerful engine and better suspension with top speed ranging up to 185 mph. A modified model called GTS was also introduced in 1996, and can be seen in several races.

Third generation (2003 – present)

Redesigned in 2003, the new viper had sharp angled body work with a heavier engine, initially a convertible. A variant SRT-10 coupe was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show as a 2006 model. It is very much similar to the GTS, with similar roof and taillights. The third generation Viper has its presence since 2004, now coined as “Dodge” as a part of marketing strategy of Chrysler for the European market.

Some of the noticeable variants of the of the Dodge Viper have been the GTS-R, Coupe, Viper powered RAM (trucks), Tomahawk (carrying motorcycle) and the Hennessey Venom 1000 twin turbo (Convertibles).
